Finally, a name worthy of combination chemotherapy

I was skimming through the hematology capsules for the ASCO 2011 meeting when I saw one by the German High-Grade Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Study Group (DSHNHL). They compared two chemo regimens against one another in younger patients with aggressive B-cell NHLs. The first is fairly standard, R-CHOEP-14 which is R-CHOP plus Etoposide given every fourteen days. They compared that to receiving an autologous stem cell transplant after receiving a regimen called:

R-MegaCHOEP

What makes it 'mega'? The cyclophosphamide and the etoposide in the mega version are at least double as much as they are in the normal R-CHOEP, sometimes much more. However, there were only 4 cycles of this, compared to 8 cycles of the standard therapy.

Results: The mega version plus ASCT did not perform as well, and was especially .... drum roll please ... toxic. Gee what a surprise. Read about it HERE.

Thanks Ross-
This looks to be some light reading for a hot day.
Does one really need to subscribe to read the stud...because the site wants my information to sign up.

It's subscription? Well either way no this study does not justify it.

however the fact that they do these capsules for shows like ASCO and others and also send out case studies (I've read 2 or 3 case studies of people with FL alone on the in the last couple weeks) that do, in some ways, make signing up with it. the case studies are actually meant for health professionals and I imagine that health pros get credit for completing them, but I complete them for ... well I wouldn't say fun but for the chance to learn a bit more.

A great shame, as mega anything is usually good. Back to the drawing board, then.
